Bitcoin: miners steal over $2 million in electricity

Bitcoin miners were accused last Tuesday (16) of stealing electricity in Malaysia. Johor state police, about 20 kilometers from Singapore, detected an electricity theft equivalent to more than $2 million to power computers that make up mining farms of cryptocurrency. According to the authorities, the energy diversion may have been occurring since the end of 2020.

The operation, carried out between February 15 and 16, resulted in the seizure of more than 1,700 Bitcoin mining machines, in addition to the arrest of seven suspects who belonged to a criminal organization specializing in mining the cryptocurrency. According to the authorities, other members are still at large, and among them is the leader of the group. However, the arrests made would have been sufficient to dismantle the operation.

Theft of electricity happened with the adulteration of energy meters, which registered a consumption well below the real. Electricity, it is worth remembering, represents the main cost of Bitcoin mining, an activity mainly concentrated in Asian countries and in Eastern Europe.
